Cultivar

'Shin Deshojo'

is an award-winning Japanese maple that won the prestigious 2018 Maple Society Maple of the Year Award for its exceptional color and outstanding landscape performance. This remarkable cultivar is celebrated for its nearly unmatched bright fiery red spring foliage—one of the most intense and brilliant red displays of any Japanese maple. The spectacular crimson-red new growth creates an absolutely stunning focal point in spring that rivals the best fall color displays. As the season progresses, foliage transitions to dark green by summer, providing a cool, serene presence and dramatic contrast to the spring show. Autumn brings a spectacular return to brilliant fire-engine red for a second stunning display, making 'Shin Deshojo' one of the few maples to deliver two exceptional red color shows per year. Smaller leaves than typical palmatum varieties create refined texture and enhance the dramatic color contrast. Reaches approximately 10 feet in ten years with an upright, vase-shaped form. The smaller leaves and dramatic color transitions make it a landscape favorite and popular bonsai selection. Requires partial shade and consistent moisture to prevent leaf scorch and preserve the brilliant spring color—afternoon shade is essential in warmer zones. Perfect as a specimen tree, in mixed borders, Japanese gardens, bonsai culture, or anywhere you want exceptional multi-season color with two dramatic red displays per year. An essential choice for collectors seeking an award-winning cultivar with unmatched spring color and year-round beauty.

Japanese Maples

Japanese maples are among the most versatile and admired ornamental trees, prized for their elegant form, refined foliage, and year-round visual interest. Suitable for both garden planting and bonsai cultivation, these trees adapt beautifully to a wide range of landscapes and growing styles.

Growth Forms & Habits

Japanese maples are available in a wide variety of natural forms, including:

  • Upright and spreading forms ideal for specimen planting
  • Weeping and cascading varieties perfect for containers, slopes, and bonsai
  • Compact and dwarf cultivars well-suited to small gardens, patios, and detailed bonsai work

Their graceful branching structure provides beauty even in winter once leaves have fallen.

Foliage & Bark Characteristics

Cultivars display a remarkable range of ornamental traits, including:

  • Deep red, burgundy, and purple foliage, often changing through the seasons
  • Fresh green or chartreuse leaves with brilliant fall color
  • Variegated patterns with cream, pink, or white accents
  • Coral bark selections with striking winter stem color
  • Rough or fissured bark types prized for texture and age character

Leaf shapes range from finely dissected laceleaf forms to broader, classic palmate leaves.

Ideal for Bonsai & Garden Use

Japanese maples are highly valued for bonsai due to their fine branching, ability to reduce leaf size, and responsiveness to pruning and training. At the same time, they perform exceptionally well as garden trees—whether planted in the ground, grown in containers, or used as focal points in Japanese-inspired landscapes.

Why Choose Japanese Maples?

  • Four-season interest: Spring foliage, summer canopy, brilliant fall color, and elegant winter structure
  • Versatile sizing: Most varieties mature between 10–15 feet, perfect for small gardens and urban spaces
  • Low maintenance: Once established, Japanese maples are hardy and require minimal care
  • Container-friendly: Ideal for patios, balconies, or featured garden spots

Award-Winning 2018 Maple of the Year

Winner of the prestigious 2018 Maple Society Maple of the Year Award, 'Shin Deshojo' is recognized as one of the finest Japanese maples for exceptional color and landscape performance. This award celebrates its nearly unmatched bright fiery red spring foliage and dramatic seasonal color transitions—making it a must-have for serious collectors and enthusiasts.
 Brilliant Fiery Red Spring Foliage

Brilliant Fiery Red Spring Foliage

Spring foliage emerges as nearly unmatched bright fiery red—one of the most intense and brilliant red displays of any Japanese maple. The spectacular crimson-red new growth creates an absolutely stunning focal point that rivals the best fall color displays, providing exceptional impact when most gardens are just waking up.
Dramatic Three-Season Color Progression

Dramatic Three-Season Color Progression

Foliage transitions through three distinct color phases: brilliant fiery red in spring, maturing to dark green by summer for a cool contrast, then returning to brilliant fire-engine red in autumn. This dramatic color progression provides two spectacular red displays per year—spring and fall—making it one of the most rewarding cultivars to grow.

Sun Needs

Partial shade to filtered sun (morning sun preferred, protect from hot afternoon sun to preserve spring color)

Soil

Prefers rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5). Excellent drainage and consistent moisture are critical for maintaining vibrant color. Amend heavy clay with organic matter to improve drainage. Avoid compacted or waterlogged soils which can lead to root stress and diminished color intensity.

Temperature

Hardy in zones 5-8. Protect from harsh winter winds and late spring frosts which can damage the spectacular emerging red foliage. Afternoon shade is essential in hot climates to prevent leaf scorch and preserve the brilliant spring color display—too much sun can cause the delicate red leaves to burn.

Water and Mulching

Water deeply and consistently, especially in the first 2–3 years. 'Shin Deshojo' requires regular moisture to maintain vibrant foliage color and prevent leaf scorch on delicate spring growth. Apply 2–3 inches of organic mulch around the base (keep off the trunk) to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and protect the root system. Consistent moisture is critical during the brilliant spring flush.
