'Bloodgood'
The most popular and widely planted red Japanese maple in North America, and for good reason. 'Bloodgood' is the gold standard for red-leafed cultivars, combining exceptional color retention, vigor, and reliability in one outstanding package. Spring foliage emerges deep burgundy-red with a hint of purple, maintaining this rich, dark red color throughout summer better than any other cultivar—while others fade to bronze or green, Bloodgood stays true. Autumn brings a spectacular transformation to brilliant crimson-scarlet that rivals the best fall color maples. More vigorous, heat-tolerant, and sun-resistant than most red cultivars, with excellent resistance to leaf scorch. Develops a strong upright vase-shaped form reaching 15-20 feet, making it suitable for medium to large gardens. Full sun produces the deepest red color. Perfect as a specimen tree, in mixed borders, or anywhere you want reliable, season-long red foliage. The benchmark cultivar against which all other red Japanese maples are measured. If you want a red Japanese maple that performs flawlessly, Bloodgood is the proven choice.
