'Jugatsu-zakura' (or white winter cherry) is a unique winter-blooming selection of the higan cherry (Prunus subhirtella) that has been grown in Japan since the 5th century. Translating to "10th month cherry," this small tree with twiggy branches blooms in Canada from January to February, despite its name. The delicate semi-double flowers are white with a hint of pink and are tightly held on the outer twigs. As spring approaches, the flower stalks grow longer. This is an exceptionally rare cultivar that blooms twice a year, making it a prized addition to any collection.
